John Edwards Admits Affair; Denies Love Child Is His

John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter’s baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby’s birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.

A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.

According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York City bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience.

Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.

Edwards said he told his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family about the affair in 2006.

Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife’s cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease.

When the National Enquirer first reported the alleged Edwards-Hunter affair last October 11, Edwards, his campaign staff and Hunter vociferously denounced the report.

“The story is false, it’s completely untrue, it’s ridiculous,” Edwards told reporters then. He repeated his denials just two weeks ago.

Edwards today admitted the National Enquirer was correct when it reported he had visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month. The former Senator said his wife had not known about the meeting.

Since becoming pregnant, Hunter has lived under assumed names in a series of expensive homes in North Carolina and, more recently, in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Edwards denied paying any money to Hunter to keep her from going public but said it was possible some of his friends or supporters may have made payments without telling him.

  1. John Edwards turned out to be a big schmuck. And heartless. His wife was in remission? That’s his excuse? He’s turned out to be sad and seedy. And why can’t he admit to the child? This story won’t die down until he does. Thank God he didn’t get the nomination; thank God he didn’t get the VP slot. He now needs to stay as far away from Obama as possible. And stay away from the convention.
The man knew he was going to run for President (and hired this woman to create videos) and has an affair? Ego. Hubris. Vanity. Heartless to his wife and kids. The people who sacrificed and worked in his campaign are pissed. Can anyone blame them?

    This makes it better???

Bruce, I think Edwards will have “other plans” during the convention. Vanity, ego and hubris is right.

  3. Thank goodness he didn’t get the nomination.

My initial support was for Governor Bill Richardson. I have friends that were fired up and ready to go for Edwards. They must be really feeling disappointed with this news.

The news about Elizabeth Edwards is heartbreaking. Whether her cancer was in remission or not doesn’t make the affair any less disheartening. He says that he told Elizabeth and his family back in 2006 and then he lied to the American people. If he would have admitted the affair when it first happened, then it would have been less of an issue. It’s the lies that are damning and then he hires her to work on his campaign and then he sneaks off to visit her. What’s with that?

He’s a liar and because of these lies, his political career is over.

  4. […] make the situation stickier, Hunter claims he fathered her baby, Francis Quinn, though the Breck Girl says the affair ended a reasonable time prior to conception. […]

  5. Cats — I have been so busy today but found the time to throw that on the blog – had to.

Your point is what concerned me most — suppose he had won the nomination and this came out??? Selfish, selfish, selfish!!!

I am not judging him personally – 50% of all married people cheat. But professionally he could have ruined the democratic chances if he had been the nominee. Suppose Obama had selected him as his VP?

And why won’t he take a paternity test? PUH-leese! It’s his child!

  6. Deanna – you make a great point, “Elizabeth was in remission” and so that makes it better???

Why did he have to say he ‘doesn’t love Rielle? How COLD is that??? Why was he visiting her at a hotel at 2:15am – for a booty call?

  7. Bruce –hubris and a huge dose of ego equals Clinton and Edwards. What does the Bible say about pride?

What is particularly interesting to me is that he admitted the affair to Elizabeth and she still encouraged him to run for President. Go figure.

  8. Well, I wonder if he really did admit the affair to Elizabeth in 2006. I don’t believe much of what he says right now. And I agree, it was selfish. I can only imagine the damage if he’d gotten the nomination or VP nod. What was the thinking?

He still hasn’t come clean. Now he’s trying to parse about being in the hotel that night. It was to visit Bob McGovern? At 2:00 am? Oh please. And if the affair was over, and the kid’s NOT his, why was he there?

I hope the truth ALL comes out soon and then the story goes away, along with Edwards.

I used to like and respect this man. He’s lost the respect of a lot of people.

  9. Bruce I’m sure there’s much more dirty dirty to come. 😉

  10. Irresponsible, selfish, and slimy. If Edwards would have clinched the nomination, he would have subjected us to four more years of McBush! I am so disappointed. I, too, was falling for his Southern charm. I think Elizabeth recently found out about the affair because she was fighting back tears today when asked by the Bob Schieffer on CBS Nightly News about the affair. She stated that she’s struggling…and it’s really, really tough. Doesn’t sound like two years worth of dealing with the bulls***. Sounds like she just found out her man has been cheating, making babies, and visiting the chick at a hotel. Yikes!

  11. Wow – great analysis! If the pain was 2 years old she would be ‘numb’.

  12. Bruce, I have ALWAYS found it peculiar that John Edwards and his family lives in a 28,000 sq ft house — the most valuable home in Orange County, North Carolina. Why would a family of five need that much space? The house also has a recreational building attached to the main living quarters. The huge ‘compound’ sits in the middle of a 102-acre estate in Chapel Hill. The property is heavily wooded with a winding driveway which ensures that the home is not visible from the road. They also have several “No Trespassing” signs posted around the property.

I wonder if the plan was to move Rielle Hunter onto the compound? Since Elizabeth knew of her and since Elizabeth was sick maybe Elizabeth came to terms with the relationship and figured eventually Arielle could move in? Hmmm…

  13. Hummm… good observations. Not sure that John and Elizabeth’s children would accept Rielle after this sleazy affair.
