Last night during a telephone “town hall meeting” a potential voter in Florida asked John McCain if he would reinstate the draft. McCain said: “I don’t know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III.”
Many of us are fearful that the U.S. government will be forced to reinstitute the draft given the prolonged Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the dismal recruitment numbers even though the US has had an all volunteer military since 1973.
“I do not believe the draft is even practicable or desirable,” McCain said.
I think it is great that McCain says there won’t be a draft unless there is World War III, but is WW III looming?
Last Friday, June 20, The New York Times published a report saying that more than 100 Israeli aircraft carried out an exercise in early June over the eastern Mediterranean Sea and Greece.
The article pointed out that the distances covered were roughly the distances from Israel to Iranian nuclear sites and that the exercise was a trial run for a large-scale air strike against Iran.
On June 21, the British newspaper The Times quoted Israeli military sources as saying that the exercise was a dress rehearsal for an attack on Iran.
The Jerusalem Post, in covering these events, pointedly referred to an article it had published in May saying that Israeli intelligence had changed its forecast for Iran passing a nuclear threshold to 2008 rather than 2009. Whether this was simply the ability to cause an explosion under controlled conditions or the ability to produce an actual weapon was unclear.
Israel’s actions in conjunction with McCain’s previous chants about ‘bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” doesn’t make me feel comfortable despite McCain’s words.
If McCain becomes President and starts a war with Iran (which he has ‘hinted’ at) Americans will have to quickly put on our marching boots and start protesting in the streets.
If America has concurrent wars in Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq and Israel joins in (which would trigger the other Muslim countries to join in) we will have WW III and it will probably last for the 100 years that McCain talks about. And if that’s the case, Uncle Sam will come calling since there WILL be a draft.
So look at your children, grandchildren, nephews and godsons or any boy you see as you go about your day-to-day business and KNOW that that child will be subjected to the draft.
During a draft a lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Services. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during that year, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and older if so declared.
Any child you see today who is 6 month old or six year old or sixteen (and every age in between), if a draft is authorized, will have to serve in the event of a 20 year to 100 year war.
